The old, the new and the revisited: tectonics, granites and resources in SW England

May 9 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Free

Reading Geological Society’s April lecture is open to all and a link can be obtained by registering on our website, www.readinggeology.org.uk on our lectures page using the provided link “Non-members registration”. During the last decade, there has been a resurgence of exploration interest in the mineral (primarily tungsten, tin, copper, lithium) and deep geothermal energy resources in SW England to a level that hasn’t been seen since before the 1985-86 tin price crisis. Tungsten and tin production from the Hemerdon Deposit near Plymouth occurred in 2015-18 and briefly catapulted the UK to being the fourth biggest global tungsten producer in 2017. The talk will provide an overview of how the regional tectonic and structural evolution of SW England has contributed to the development of the Cornubian Batholith, and its associated resources, and some of the current exploration activities.

Dr Robin Shail is an Associate Professor of Geology at the University of Exeter Cambourne School of Mines.
