AGM arrangements for 2020
Our scheduled meeting for the GA AGM on 1st May has had to be cancelled due to the Coronavirus outbreak. In response the Council has agreed to decouple the formal business from the Awards ceremony and Annual Dinner. A voting form will be enclosed with the Annual Report and Accounts to be sent out in mid April. We request members raise any questions prior to 1st May and also submit their approval in writing (either electronically or by post) by that date. We hope to hold the 2020 Awards Ceremony and Annual Dinner later in the year. At the moment we are looking at the 2nd October, before and after our scheduled meeting but will need to confirm in due course.
GASS 2020 postponed
It may not surprise you to hear that in this present climate we will be postponing the Geologists’ Association Student Symposium 2020 (GASS 2020), which was scheduled to be held at Burlington House on the 15th of May.
Given the currently unfolding COVID-19 pandemic, and following the closure of the Geological Society until the end of April and current government advice, we have unfortunately had to make the tough decision to postpone the upcoming Geologists’ Association Student Symposium. This is not a decision we have come to lightly, but the safety and health of all attendees and participants is our foremost concern.
We have decided not to schedule a new date until we know how the situation is going to play out. Burlington house is already booked heavily for November with rescheduled events so we may end up cancelling GASS 2020. GASS 2021 will be on the 21st May 2021.
We shall endeavour to keep you updated as to any changes.
If you have any questions regarding GASS 2020, please get in touch at: gass@geologistsassociation.org.uk
Thank you for understanding and best wishes,
GASS 2020 Convening Committee
Updated 17th March 2020.
In-line with many organisations that arrange events, The Geologists’ Association is in the process of reviewing our event calendar for 2020 and making contingency plans around the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Please note that due to the ongoing risk posed to public health by the outbreak of coronavirus, the Geological Society’s buildings (including the GA office) at Burlington House in London will be closed until further notice. We shall endeavour to keep the website updated with relevant information. Contact with the ‘GA office’ via e-mail remains an option.
The Geologists’ Association is committed to following the latest UK Government advice on events and public gatherings. Current government and public health advice states that all, non-essential social contact with other people should be avoided for the foreseeable future. Those at risk or with underlying health issues are being advised to self-isolate for a period of 12 weeks.
Therefore, we are advising all Local and Affiliate Groups to cancel or postpone their meetings and local club events for the foreseeable future, in line with government advice.
We have a number of elderly members amongst us. If you know of any in your area, why not drop them an email or give them a call to chat Geology for a while and make sure they have all they need. For those with underlying health issues, the next 12 weeks is likely to be a long and potentially lonely time.
