Is GASS for me?
The Geologists’ Association Student Symposium (GASS2023) is being organised by the Geologists' Association (GA) with support from the Geological Society (GSL) and will take place as a hybrid event on Friday 19th May 2023, at Burlington House, London.
The theme of the symposium is: “Geoscience challenges in the 21st century: What difference will your research make?” It provides geoscience students from undergraduate to PhD level with a forum in which they can present their research in order to receive feedback on their science, practise presentation skills, network with their peers and receive career advice from industry and academic professionals in a supportive and encouraging environment. Our chosen theme for GASS2023 reflects the GA’s involvement in geological issues that affect society and we predict soliciting abstracts from the broad themes of i) geohazards, ii) exploration, iii) climate change and iv) geoengineering, but not exclusively so.
The one-day event will include one key note talk from an excellent geoscience communicator, who will reflect not only on their science but also to give students an insight into their career path. The primary programme will involve 20 min talks from students who will present work done during internships, summer projects, Masters projects and PhDs. We will also hold a vibrant poster session, which will be accompanied by “2 mins of fame” for each.
The symposium is open to all to register and, as in previous years, anticipate the symposium will be attended by Geologists’ Association and Geological Society members, students, industry professionals, citizen scientists, and academics. The event provides an opportunity to learn about the cutting-edge geoscience that is being conducted by early-career geoscientists.
The deadline for abstracts is 31st March 2023.
Registration opens on-line in January, 2023. Registration for Student members of the GA and/or GSL will be free. Registration for Student non-members and non-Student members of the GA will be £20.
