Virtual GA Student Symposium (vGASS) 2021

Government restrictions regarding the COVID-19 pandemic prevented us from holding the GA’s Student Symposium (GASS) at Burlington House this year. Therefore the event was run virtually over two half days; the afternoon of Thursday 20 May and the morning of Friday 21 May 2021.

Being virtual GASS2021 had a truly international flavour, with contributions not just from all parts of the UK but also from China, Brazil, Norway, Spain, Turkey and USA.

Our Keynote speakers were Dr Mike Simmons (Halliburton), Dr Ozlem Adiyaman Lopes (UNESCO) and Professor Iain Stewart (Plymouth).

Check out the Programme and Book of Abstracts below.

If you registered for GASS2021 (or are a GA member) then you will shortly be able to view recordings of all the talks, posters and Keynotes in a Private GASS area of the GA website.

Each year we award prizes for best talk and poster. This year we are delighted to announce that the

Best Talk winner was Matthew Staitis (University of Edinburgh)
who spoke to us on
Investigating Deccan-induced environmental changes, prior to the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg) mass extinction

and our
Best Poster winner was Diana Moreno Martín (Salamanca University, Spain)
Mineral resources associated with shear zones in the Eastern Spanish Central System.

GASS presents a unique opportunity for geology students to share their research not only with their peers but with professional and amateur geologists as well.

GASS will be back in May 2022
